Abstract
Test results are presented on two prototype systems having differing tape-drive mechanisms for use with metal measurement tapes for determining the scale error. Two systems are proposed from these results for balancing out the errors in measuring the scale due to deviations in the tape thickness from nominal, which involve an improved tape drive mechanism. Formulas are derived for the minimum permissible diameters of the measurement disk, the guide rollers, and the optimum ratio of the diameters for the unwinding and winding tape drums.
