Abstract

A new method is given for determining a monitored parameter from a selected pair of correlated signals, with reference to distinguishing coal from rock. Radical improvements can be obtained in accuracy and reliability if the spread ellipses for the signal pair residues for a constant value of the monitored parameter are highly elongated and are inclined at almost a right angle to the projection of the calibration curve on the signal plane. It is shown that in favorable cases one can reduce the error by thousands of orders in distinguishing coal from rock by using a pair of signals.
