Study of the characteristics of a sea-level gage based on a laser interferometer

Abstract

An analysis is made of the feasibility of using a laser-interferometric hydrostatic pressure gage as a sea-level gage for the detection of tsunamis far from shore. The resolution and thermal stability required of the gage are established and a brief description is given of the model and the laboratory unit used for experimental studies. The metrological characteristics of the gage permit measurement of fluctuations of sea level with a resolution of the order of 10 mm, which is sufficient to detect tunami waves from a depth of about 300 m.
