Abstract
A state survey of all two-year colleges in New York focused on the assessment of academic advising in order to facilitate recommendations for institutional policy making. Questions were asked about pre-service training of academic advisers, in-service training of advisers, and the evaluation of advisers and the advising process. Responses were obtained to 10 literature-based statements using a six-point Likert-type scale. A zero-order correlation matrix and a common factor analysis showed relationships between and among variables. It was emphasized that there does not appear to be a single prescription for those institutions who wish to formulate policy for academic advisement.
