Veränderung des Epiphysenknorpels im Sinne einer Verlangsamung der Zellwucherung und der Knorpelresorption;
in den ersten 4 Tagen zu schweren Zirkulationsstörungen im Bereich der Metaphysen, besonders der langen Röhrenknochen, mit Entstehung teilweise ausgedehnter Marknekrosen; daneben zu einem intensiven Abbau von Knochen durch ein reticuläres Bindegewebe mit zahlreichen Osteoclasten und Gefäßen, bei fast völligem Stillstand des Knochenanbaus;
Summary
Rabbits were given large doses of the chelator —EDTA—by subcutaneous injection during growth. The animals were sacrificed on the 3, 5, 7, 9, 15 and 17th days, and the following skeletal findings were made:
The changes in the epiphyseal cartilage were characterized by a delay in cell growth and in cartilage resorption. In the first 4 days severe circulatory disturbances appeared in the region of the metaphysis, —especially those of the long bones, with the development of in part extensive marrow necroses. At the same time there was an intensive removal of bone by a reticular connective tissue rich in osteoclasts and blood vessels. An almost complete cessation of bone formation occurred.
In the subsequent days the circulatory disturbances equalized and the bone resorption diminished. There was a slight resumption of bone formation, principally of the primary bony trabeculae. Atrophy in the metaphyseal trabeculae continued, and a bone-poor medullary zone formed between the trabecular regions.
