On the basis of an x-ray structure study of the 4-nitrophenylhydrazone of benzoyl chloride, the presence of a conjugated system in the molecule has been established, also rather short intramolecular contacts, including NH ... Cl.

The effect of the nitro group is manifested in a compaction of the molecule in comparison with the phenylhydrazone of benzoyl chloride and in the formation of the intermolecular hydrogen bond NH ... O.
