Conformations of isomeric 4α-chloro-3(10)-carene epoxides

Conclusions

  1. 1.

    In the crystalline state 4a-chloro-3α,10α-epoxycarane exists in a “sofa” conformation in which the epoxide ring and its attached carbon atom form a planar fragment, and in which the halogen substituent occupies an axial orientation.

  2. 2.

    Using dipole moment and Kerr effect calculations and measurements it was found that the isomeric 4α-chloro-3(10)carene epoxides exist in the form of conformational equilibria involving 1,2-diplanar “sofa” forms in which the chlorine atoms (in each equilibrium conformation) preferentially occupy axial positions.
