Conclusions

3,3,3,-Trifluoropropene, which polymerizes only with difficulty under radical conditions, smoothly undergoes radical telomerization with CBr4 upon peroxide initiation in benzene with the formation of regular telomers CBr3(CH2CHCF3)nBr. Telomers with n=1−3 were isolated.

The mean individual chain transfer constants Cn in the telomerization of 3,3,3-trifluoropropene with CBr4 are much larger than unity (C1∼15 and C2∼64). This shows that chain transfer to the telogen occurs much more efficiently than radical chain growth.
