Determination of the micropore volume of activated carbon with homogeneous micropore structure from Henry's constants based on a model of limited slitlike micropores

Conclusions

  1. 1.

Based on a model of a slitlike micropore in the form of a circular washer, a method is proposed for calculating the radius and width of the slit (R, ℓ*, and also the total micropore volume (V*) from experimental values of heat (Qskst/*), of entropy (δS*) of adsoprtion in Henry's region and the radius of inertia of the micropores.

  2. 2.

The values of V* were calculated from experimental values of Qst and δS* for Ar, Kr, and Xe, using four samples of the Saran-type activated carbon; they were found to be 2–3 times higher than the values calculated from the infinite slit model. The values of V*, calculated by using Ar for all the samples of the adsorbent, coincide with the micropore volume W0 calculated from the limiting adsorption; for Kr and Xe, V*/W0 > 0.5.

  3. 3.

On changing parameters R and ℓ*, the calculated values of Henry's constants, Qst * and V*, are related by approximately the same empirical relationship, which holds for several activated carbons.
