Conclusions

  1. 1.

Study of the Raman spectra has shown that trimethyl phosphite exists as a three-conformer equilibrium mixture in the liquid state.

  2. 2.

Polymorphism appears in the crystallization of TMP, solidification bringing down a mixture of two types of crystals, each representing one stabilized conformer.

  3. 3.

Interpreted theoretically, the data on the number of lines in the Raman spectra, their frequencies and relative intensities, and the variation of the relative intensities under alteration of the polarity of the solvent, suggests that the equilibrium in question here involves one conformer with “cissoid” orientation of all three O-CH3 bonds relative to the unshared electron pair of the phosphorus and two other conformers, each with one OCH3 group in the trans position.
