Summary
Damage was revealed electron-microscopically in the epithelial cells of the proximal renal tubule of lead poisoned rats. As an expression of toxic damage of thecytoplasm, there was at first an increased diffuse edema of the ground plasma, then increased numbers of cytosomes and bodies of complex structure were found, which apparently developed by means of focal damage to the cytoplasm. Localized deposits of crystals, which formed in damaged regions of the cytoplasm, contained lead histochemically as well as calcium and phosphate. They enlarged by appositional growth to concentrically layered concretions, and some ended up finally in the tubular lumen. In the enlarged irregularly formedcell nuclei, in addition to protein and lipid containing corpuscular inclusions, cytoplasmic invaginations were also observed. The glomeruli and mitochondria showed no changes worthy of mention.
The formal genesis of the tubular epithelial cell damage by a lead intoxication is to be differentiated basically from an anoxemic cell damage.
