Intramolecular spin exchange and structure of palladium(II) complexes with 2,2,5,5-tetramethyl-4-thioxo-3-imidazolidine-1-oxyl

Conclusions

  1. 1.

    The structures of Pd(II) complexes with 2,2,5,5-tetramethyl-4-thioxo-3-imidazolidine-1-oxyl (HL) have been determined by a combination of EPR, IR, and UV spectroscopy; the complexes which are formed are either bi-, tri-, or tetraradicals in which spin exchange can take place via an indirect or cross mechanism.

  2. 2.

    Based on analysis of the EPR spectra of solutions of the complexes over wide temperature ranges we conclude that the structural rigidity of the complexes increases in the order PdA2Cl2 < Pd(HL)2X2 (X=Cl, Br) < Pd2L4.

  3. 3.

    The efficiency of spin-exchange interaction is determined by the nature of the palladium-ligand bond: intracomplex or chelate compounds are characterized by higher ¦J/a¦ values than coordinatively solvated compounds.
