Recombination and transcription in theHisB andpaba1 loci ofAspergillus nidulans

Abstract

The question whether recombination in any way affects transcription is unsettled. Of the three possible answers, inhibition, help, or no effect, all have been proposed.

InAspergillus nidulans, adenine slightly inereases meiotic and mitotic recombination in thepaba 1 locus. Histidine, however, does not affect meiotic recombination in thehisB locus. It is concluded that recombination and transcription do not compete during meiosis in these genes, and the effect of adenine is due to some other cause.

Some of the divergent conclusions of the various authors may be partly due to inherent differences in the systems studied: cucaryote or procaryote; mitotic or meiotic recombination; genes that are normally active or inactive at the time of crossing over. The basis of mitotic recombination may be mimicry of an aspect of meiotic recombination, for example unwinding of DNA during transcription. This would explain why transcription may favour mitotic but not affect or even hinder meiotic recombination.
