Conclusions
Dicationic salts of 1,4-dinitrocyclooctatetraene dianion in an MeOH medium have an electronic structure in which the excess negative charges are localized primarily on the nitro groups. In DMSO, a state is stabilized in which the overall negative charge is distributed between the eight-membered ring and the two nitro groups.
