Summary
A bilateral caseating adrenal tuberculosis, similar to isolated organ tuberculosis, was produced in rats with strains of the avian mycobacterium group which were virulent for chickens. The tuberculous involvement of the other organs was comparatively minimal. With the exception of the kidney, in which exudative and granulating changes occurred, extra-adrenally there was a granulating tuberculosis. Because of the adrenal involvement, the insignificant general tuberculosis, and the chronic course, there were parallels with the same disease picture in humans. In interpreting this appropriate experimental model for the study of unanswered questions in the pathogenesis of adrenal tuberculosis it may be assumed that there is an interplay of micro- and macro-organismic factors. For the development of the infection in the adrenal, special biological properties of the mycobacterium are required. Macro-organismic influences, especially the local corticosteroid effect, may well be decisive for the further progress of the infection and for the change in the substrate in the adrenal.
