Summary

Out of the 44,826 autopsies performed in our institute from 1913 to 1962 there were 137 (3.06%) proven cases of colitis ulcerosa. When distributed into decades, an absolute increase from 1932–1962 became apparent (Fig. 1). This increase was considered statistically significant, except for the years 1943–1952, where it fell within the expected range. A comparison of the frequency before and after the antibiotic era (1913–1942 versus 1943–1962), permitted one to detect a slight increase, the trend of which, however, started earlier, namely since 1923. Nutritional influences and epidemics of dysentery during and after the war years did not express themselves as factors in our material. Seventy-two (52.5%) of the patients were females, 65 (47.54%) were males. The average age was 56.5 years. In regards to local and general complications refer to Tab. 2–8.
