Summary
The results of histochemical studies of enzymes in experimental cardiac infarction are reported, and include as well a survey of the enzymatic changes occurring with time.
As a prominent finding thereby is the qualitative change of the formazan granules in the demonstration of dehydrogenase; this change is interpreted as resulting from an increased permeability of the mitochondrial membrane and an enhanced activity.
Of special interest is the increased ATPase activity in fixed sections. This increased activity until now has not been described. This result is looked upon as a consequence of uncoupling of the oxidative phosphorylation; it depends on the activity of the mitochondrial ATPase.
The myofibrillary ATPase demonstrated at pH 9.4 shows only minimal changes. Its activity remains intact as long as the thick filaments of myosin of the myofibrils are demonstrable as carriers of the ATPase property.
