I.
In sham-operated and left-sided nephrectomized albino rats, and in unoperated controls the percentage-change of the juxtaglomerular index of the remaining right kidney — as compared to the index of the left kidney — was investigated. Shortly after the operation (6–24 hours) a decrease of the index in the right kidney was evident. This was either due to a rise of the intrarenal blood pressure or to increased utilization. After 7–30 days in the right kidney increased indices were detectable; these were interpreted as evidence of a compensatory hypertrophy or hyperplasia. After the 30th post-operative day a decrease in the index occurred lasting to the 180th experimental day. At the same time a hypertension developed apparently representing the cause for the fall in the index.

12, 24, and 48 hours after bilateral ureteral ligation of dehydrate animals and of those with water ad libitum, there was a degranulation of the granular cells of the juxtaglomerular apparatus and a sharp reduction in their number. These changes were not accompanied by hypertension. The authors postulate, that the substance in the granules partakes in the control of the intrarenal blood-flow.
