Repeated chain breaking in nitroxyl radicals in oxidation of ethylbenzene in the presence of alcohols and acids

Conclusions

  1. 1.

On the example of ethylbenzene, it was demonstrated for the first time that the stable nitroxyl radical in the presence of a primary or secondary alcohol and acid effectively inhibits oxidation of hydrocarbons and is not consumed during the experiment. The rate of chain breaking in this system is directly proportional to the concentration of the nitroxyl radical, the alcohol, and the acid ([acid] < [alcohol] [>N0]) and is not a function of the partial oxygen pressure.

  2. 2.

The protonated form of the nitroxyl radical and the hydroxyperoxide radical of the alcohol participate in chain breaking.
