Summary
Copper(II) complexes of 2-picolyl- (PMK), 2-lutidyl-(LMK) and 2-quinaldyl- (QMK) methylketones have been prepared and studied by analysis, magnetic susceptibility, e.s.r., reflectance and i.r. spectral measurements. The complexes [(L-H)CuX)]2 and [(L-H)Cu(OH)(H2O)]2, (L=PMK, LMK or QMK and X=Cl or Br) are assigned square planar and square pyramidal geometries, respectively. The complexes of stoichiometry, [(L-H)2Cu] are found to have square planar structures for L=PMK and tetrahedral structures when L=LMK or QMK. An octahedral structure is assigned to the complexes [L2CuX2]. Magnetic susceptibility data in conjunction with the e.s.r. parameters are used to explain the mechanism of interaction of the copper(II) centres in the dimeric complexes. The interaction of the title complexes with pyridine afforded the monomeric mono- or di-pyridine adduct complexes.
