A new asymmetric-telechelic polyisobutylene prepared by thecis-2-pinanol/BCl3, initiating system

Summary

A new asymmetric-telechelic polyisobutylene (PIB):

has been prepared by the polymerization of isobutylene (IB) using the novelcis-2-pinanol/BCl3 initiating system in CH3Cl diluent in the −30 to −50°C range. The molecular weight range explored was ¯Mn = 1000–35,000. The polymerization most likely involves thein situ formed 2-pinanyl chloride.
