Conclusions

  1. 1.

The vibrational spectra of the salts M2B10X10 (X=H, Cl, Br, I; M=K, Cs) in the solid state and in aqueous solutions, as well as those of the acid (D3O)2B10D10 in D2O solution have been recorded and analyzed.

  2. 2.

An assignment has been proposed for the frequencies of the B10X10 2− polyhedron on the basis of the activity of the vibrations in the IR and Raman spectra, the shifts in the frequencies upon isotopic substitution, the values for the degrees of depolarization of the Raman lines, and comparison with the spectra of the icosahedral anions b12X12 2−.

  3. 3.

The similarity in the frequencies of the corresponding fundamental vibrations of the B10X10 2− and B12X21 2− polyhedra is indicative of the similarity in their force fields.
