Summary

  1. 1.

The number of mitochondria in the liver was determined after homogenisation with the help of a counting chamber and a phase microscope in 103 normal and starving white mice.

  2. 2.

The normal animals showed values of 30,93×1010 mitochondria for every gramme liver. Within the first 48 hours the number of mitochondria increased and diminished considerably during the following fasting days.

  3. 3.

The decrease in the number of mitochondria during subsequent days is thought to be due especially to the clumping of mitochondria. The question of increased fragibility of the mitochondria at this time is also discussed and the problem of specifity of these alterations critically surveyed.
