Conclusions

Irradiation of phosphine hydride complexes MH4L4, where M=Mo or W and L=PMePh2 or 1/2(Ph2PCH2)2, in a CO atmosphere leads to successive replacement of the hydride and phosphine ligands by carbonyl, forming M(CO)xL6−x (x=2, 3, 4, 5). The degree of substitution x depends on the nature of the metal M and ligand L and on the length of the irradiation period. The rate of photochemical interaction of MH4L4, with CO is approximately two orders of magnitude greater than the rate of the analogous dark reaction.
