1.
4-Hexene-1,3-diol is dehydrated in vapor phase to 1,3,5-hexatriene and a mixture of 1-methyl- and 2-methylcyclopentadienes with intermediate formation of 2-methyl-5, 6-dihydro-2H-pyran and 2,4-hexadien-1-ol.

2.
The direction of the reaction is determined by the nature of the catalyst: in the presence of calcium phosphates, hexatriene is mainly formed (50–55%), and in the presence of phosphoric acid, methylcyclopentadienes (50–52%).
