Conclusions

  1. 1.

The liquid-phase oxidation of N,N-diethylamide (DEA) by molecular oxygen proceeds by a radical-chain mechanism with quadratic chain termination. The rate constants for chain propagation and termination have been measured.

  2. 2.

It has been discovered that multiple chain termination by a single antioxidant molecule occurs in DEA during oxidation. This is explained by the redox properties of the α-peroxy radicals of the amide. Aβ-CH bond is necessary for these properties to be exhibited. The rate constants and stoichiometric coefficients for inhibition by various types of antioxidant have been measured at 75°C.

  3. 3.

The rate constants for initiation by azobisisobutyronitrile (75°C) and azobiscyclo-hexanecarbonitrile (90°C) have been measured in DEA.
