Oxidation of amines by molecular oxygen 7. Reactions of N,N,N′,N′-tetramethylethylenediamine peroxide radicals

Conclusions

  1. 1.

    N,N,N′,N′-Tetramethylethylenediamine (TMEDA) oxidizes through a radical-chain mechanisms with second-power chain rupture. Rate constants for chain extension and rupture have been measured.

  2. 2.

    Rate constants for the reaction of various classes of antioxidants with TMEDA (RO2 .) radicals have been determined at 40°C. The oxidation-reduction properties of the RO2 . radicals account for the high values of the stoichiometric inhibition coefficients of the aromatic amines, stable nitroxyl radicals, and transition-metal salts.
