Summary
The work of Lin, Richardson & Eyring and Boddington, Feng & Gray on the theory of the initiation of thermal explosion by steady intense light is developed further. In the large activation energy limit analytic solution is possible and conditions for criticality are deduced for large and small values of light-intensity parameter. The disappearance of criticality is examined numerically for the full range of light-intensity parameter. Results are compared with those obtained by using a simple constant reaction-rate assumption.
