Abstract

Macromorphological variation within theOrnithogalum umbellatum L. (Hyacinthaceae) complex in France was studied. The resulting data were treated by numerical taxonomy methods. Three morphs can be identified: one corresponding to diploid plants, another made up of triploids and a third which encompasses plants having ploidy level above 3x (4x, 5x, and 6x). A systematic interpretation of the complex is proposed wherein only one species,O. umbellatum, is retained. This species corresponds to a polyploid complex undergoing evolution.
