Abstract

The vacuum energy of a bosonic membrane is calculated on a flat background MD−2×T2, where MD) is a D-dimensional Minkowski spacetime, and T2 is a 2-torus. The vacuum energy is represented in a modularinvariant form. The vacuum energy of a supermembrane (D = 11) is also given in modular-invariant form.
