Abstract
If niobium- resp. tantalum-pentachloride is reduced with zinc in great excess according to the so called auxiliary-metal-bath-process, melts of zinc metal und of zinc chloride are obtained. The molten zinc metal contains the niobium and tantalum metal. All non-metallic impurities are found in the molten zinc chloride. The niobium and tantalum metal can be gained from the niobium- resp. tantalum-zinc-alloy, which can easily be separated from the molten zinc-chloride by distillation of the zinc. Dissolving of the zinc with acids was not successful, because acid-resistant niobium- resp. tantalum-zinc compounds remain, which however are oxidized on the surface. If the zinc is distilled from these compounds, the obtained metals are less pure. In order to protect the very fine and reactive metal particles—remaining after the distillation of the zinc—from a subsequent oxidation by air, wetting with toluol is useful.
