Abstract
Under both in vivo and in vitro conditions, haemocytes ofGalleria mellonella engulf bacteria, yeast and abiotic particles, whereby a large proportion of haemocytes are engaged in this reaction. Following the inoculation of particles, some are cleared from the circulation but not phagocytosed. Simultaneous injection of these particles and eitherN-acetyl-d-glucosamine ord-mannose causes an increase in the proportion of phagocytosing haemocytes, which is assumed to be mediated by inhibition of their agglutination.
