Summary
Ovaries of juvenile rats and rabbits were studied before and after stimulation with PMS (Anteron-Schering/Berlin) and HCG (Primogonyl-Schering/Berlin). Without application of hormones the cells surrounding follicles (theca) and in the stroma ovarii resemble typical fibrocytes. After hormone stimulation these cells of the theca and of several areas of the stroma luteinize. As demonstrated by electron microscopy these cells contain the morphological substrate of steroid synthesis: Clumsy cells with big nuclei and nucleoli, mitochondria with tubules and vesicles, an increase of the smooth endoplasmic reticulum and numerous lipid inclusions. Therefore these cells of connective tissue origin may be described as “interstitial gland”, taking into account their joint reaction and function. — Fibroblast growing in vitro from ovaries of embryonal, juvenile or adult rats also respond to application of HCG with a remarcable augmentation of dense lipid inclusions.
