Application of a laser heterodyne detector in submillimeter wave spectroscopy with a harmonic generator

Abstract

A spectrometer has been constructed for use in high-resolution heterodyne spectroscopy in the submillimeter wave region. The spectrometer employs a klystron driven harmonic generator as the source, and a heterodyne detection system with a laser as the local oscillator. Transitions in D2O and CH3OH were measured in the spectral region around 891 GHz, using an HCN laser. An evaluation of the spectroscopic sensitivity and harmonic generator efficiency shows that the present spectrometer can be used up to about 1.4 THz.
