Abstract
Lung mites of the genusPneumocoptes of French, Swiss and German origin, as well as mounted specimens of the two known American species, were reexamined and compared. Morphological differences were found to exist in the shape of the fused coxa I apodemes, in the ratios of length of the female genu/tibia/tarsus IV, in the length of the whip-like seta of tarsus I, in the shape of the tarsi and some of their appendages and in the dentition of the chelicerae. It is concluded that the European mites from the bank voleClethrionomys glareolus constitute a valid species and hence have to be namedP. tiollaisi Doby, 1963 and that the two American species,P. penrosei Weidman, 1917 andP. jellisoni Baker, 1951 are also valid species.
