Catalytic properties of ni kel-zeolite catalysts as a function of the state of the nickel in the reaction of benzene with ethylene

Conclusions

  1. 1.

By studying the catalytic properties and photoelectron spectra of samples that had been subjected to various treatments it was established that the selectivity of the reaction of benzene with ethylene on nickel-zeolite catalysts depends on the state of the nickel (Ni2+, Ni(0), NiO) in them.

  2. 2.

Ion-exchange Y zeolites, containing Ni2+ cations, and two-component Y zeolite catalysts in a form possessing Brønsted acidity, and containing nickelous oxide, accelerate the formation of mainly secondary butylbenzene.

  3. 3.

Nickel-zeolite catalysts, containing all of the nickel as the metal, accelerate the formation of ethylbenzenes and are inactive in the synthesis of secondary butylbenzene from benzene and ethylene.
