Conclusions

  1. 1.

    Aliphatic and cycloaliphatic amines are carbonylated under CO pressure in the presence of FeCl3 at 200–270° to give the corresponding formyl derivative in up to 85% yield when based on amine taken for reaction. Monoethanolamine is converted to N-(β-hydroxyethyl)formamide at 175°.

     
  2. 2.

    During reaction the FeCl3 is converted to Fe(CO)5, which forms complexes with the excess amine.
