Conclusions

1.
The concept of “adsorption vacancies” as elements of the adsorption volume, filled by adsorbed molecules, was introduced. Adsorption on a solid from a homogeneous gas phase is considered as a process of formation of a binary solution of molecules of the adsorbate and vacancies.
-
2.
An analysis of “vacancy solutions” (with the same size of the molecules of the components) by the methods of thermodynamics of solutions revealed that for a number of systems the vacancy solution is regular, since its “excess entropy of mixing” is equal to zero in the entire interval of fillings of the adsorption volume. The regularity of the vacancy solution is equivalent to temperature invariance of the curve of excess free energy of the adsorbate.
-
3.
The temperature invariance of the excess free energy determines the temperature invariance of the characteristic curve during adsorption, which is observed in a narrower interval of fillings.
-
4.
The regularity of the vacancy solutions characteristic of a large group of adsorption systems permits a calculation of the differential heats and entropy according to one adsorption isotherm and according to the temperature dependence of the limiting adsorption.
