Hydrogenation of piperylene on Na zeolites

Conclusions

  1. 1.

    The activity of the zeolites for the hydrogenation of piperylene decreases in the order NaA ≈ NaM ≫ NaX > NaY ≈ NaE.

  2. 2.

    The selectivity for the hydrogenation of piperylene to n-pentenes on zeolites NaA, NaE, and NaM is not less than 95% with 100% conversion of the original hydrocarbon. In the case of zeolites X and Y the selectivity diminishes with conversion, being ∼80% at ∼60% conversion.

  3. 3.

    The 1-pentene/2-pentene ratio in the reaction products and the formation of a small amount of n-pentane by direct hydrogenation of piperylene without the intermediacy of n-pentenes point to the sequential addition of hydrogen atoms or ions to the piperylene molecule.
