1.
A MgO film is formed on the surface when Mg is reacted with O2 at\(10^{ - 8}< _{p0_2 }< 10^{ - 5}\) torr and T∿293°K. An oxide film of mixed composition, containing MgO and Mg(OH)2, is formed when Mg is reacted with H2O vapors under the same conditions.

2.
The rates for the oxidation of Mg in O2 and in H2O vapors are very close. After an exposure of ∿30–50 L, a stable oxide film is formed when Mg is oxidized in O2 or in H2O vapors.
