Conclusions
-
1.
The complexes of CoCl2 with the anisidines (o- and p-) are catalysts for the hydrogenation of 1,3-pentadiene (50°, 100 gauge atm), while the complexes with aniline or o- and p-toluidine are catalytically inert.

2.
The hydrogenation of 1,3-pentadiene is highly selective, with the predominant formation of trans-2-pentene. The reaction probably proceeds via the intermediate step of the hydride.
