Conclusions

  1. 1.

    The structures of theβ-hydroxy derivatives of the monopyridinecarboxylic acids in neutral, acid, and alkaline solution have been studied through UV spectroscopy.

     
  2. 2.

    The data of IR spectroscopy indicate that the 5-hydroxypicolinic and 5-hydroxynicotinic acids ionize at the carboxyl group and form intermolecular hydrogen bonds in the crystalline state, whereas the 3-hydroxynicotinic acid is only partially ionized in the crystalline state and forms intramolecular hydrogen bonds.
