Conclusions

The degradation of BGS H in alkaline NaBH4 solution is accompanied by the destruction of ∼40% of the galactosamine residues that are found in the node of the carbohydrate-peptide linkage. The other monosaccharides are not affected here, which makes it possible to use this procedure to obtain the carbohydrate chains of BGS with a minimum degree of degradation. Oligosaccharides with a variable molecular weight (from 500 to 3000 and higher) are formed as a result of the degradation, which indicates the great heterogeneity of the carbohydrate chains of the BGS. A number of the oligosaccharides was isolated in the pure state.
