Conclusions

  1. 1.

    When n-butyllithium is reacted with π-C5H5CoB9H9C2H2-π in ether the metalation proceeds predominantly at the C-H bonds of the π-dicarbollyl ligand to give the mono- and dilithium derivatives.

     
  2. 2.

    Only replacement of the hydrogen atom in the π-cyclopentadienyl ligand by the organic group occurs when either n-butyl- or phenylethynyllithium is reacted with π-C5H5CoB9H9C2H2-π in tetrahydrofuran.
