Acid-base interactions in nitromethane

3. Determination of acid dissociation constants by the potentiometric titration method

Conclusions

  1. 1.

A method has been developed whereby dissociation constants of acids in nitromethane can be calculated from data obtained by potentiometric titrations with glass electrodes. A nitromethane solution of N,N′-diphenylguanidine served as the titrant.

  2. 2.

Discussion is given of the determination of the pKHA value of an acid in a nonaqueous medium, acid dissociation being masked by homoconjugation and partial salt dissociation.

  3. 3.

A method is proposed for determining pKHA(CH3NO2) values for substituted acetic acids. The values so obtained proved to be linearly dependent on the acid pKHA (CH3NO2) value and theσ * value for the substituent. The existence of such relationships is evidence of the differentiating effect of nitromethane on the acid strength.
