Kinetics of the chlorine-initiated oxidation of propane in packed vessels having various s/v values

Summary

  1. 1.

The reaction kinetics of propane oxidation have been investigated in an ordinary glass vessel and then with packings of different diameters. The reaction was carried out in the absence of chlorine and with 0.5% of chlorine added. Introduction of the packing had the effect of practically eliminating peroxide compounds from the reaction products of propane oxidation.

  2. 2.

It was found that reducing the ratio S/V, by use of a finer packing, increased the rate of formation of aldehydes at the start of the reaction, but decreased their final yield. Addition of chlorine made it possible to ensure both a high yield and a high rate of formation of aldehydes.

  3. 3.

An increase in the value of the autocatalytic factor was noted with extension of the surface, and this showed the part played by the surface in the process of chain branching.

  4. 4.

Molecular intermediate peroxides were easily decomposed on the hot surface. Reasons are given for believing that decomposition of peroxide radicals occurred still more rapidly on the surface.
