Abstract
A computational model of a chemical kinetics scheme to describe the reactions among a selection of atomic, molecular, and free-radical species present in the stratosphere and mesosphere is presented. Twentyone species and ninety chemical and photodissociation reactions are considered. Included in the model are twenty-eight reactions involving seven carbon-based molecules and radicals. Calculations are for the altitude range of 20 to 70 kilometers. They show that the concept of a constant mixing ratio in the altitude range considered is valid only for the two major constituents and the inert gases. They also indicate that the atomic oxygen particle densities are lower than those calculated previously due to the interactions with the carbon species.
