Abstract
Reaction of trichloroacetaldehyde withMeldrum's acid did not yeild the expected olefin2 but its hydration product8. A keto-enol equilibrium exists in the acylal ring. Dichloroacetaldehyde andMeldrum's acid, however, reacted to give the desired olefin2c, a much strongerLewis acid than the hitherto know compounds of this type.2c reacted readily with neutral methanol as base, in contrast to all other know organicLewis acids which underwent neutralization reactions only with methoxide, amines, and phosphines.
