Die anodische Anregung der radikalischen Polymerisation von Methylmethacrylat bei der Elektrolyse von Alkaliacetaten

Zusammenfassung

Durch Versuche in Elektrolysenzellen mit getrennten Elektrodenräumen wurde festgestellt, daß nach der Elektrolyse von Alkaliacetaten in Dimethylformamid-Essigsäure-Gemischen zwischen Platinelektroden in Gegenwart von Methylmethacrylat lediglich im Anodenraum Polymeres vorlag, sofern alle Störeffekte, wie z. B. thermische Polymerisation durch Stromwärme, Flüssigkeitsbewegung während der Elektrolyse, durch geeignete Versuchsdurchführung ausgeschaltet und etwaige störende Verunreinigungen durch eine in Abwesenheit des Monomeren vorgenommene Vorelektrolyse entfernt wurden. Dieses Ergebnis beweist, daß unter den genannten Bedingungen eine Polymerisationsanregung ausschließlich durch den anodischen Elektrodenprozeß erfolgt.

Abstract

Experiments performed in cells containing separated electrode compartments have shown that after electrolysis of alkali acetates in dimethyl formamide-acetic acid mixtures between platinum electrodes in presence of methyl methacrylate polymer is only found in the anode compartment. This is only true when all other effects such as thermal polymerization due to heat liberated by the passing electric current, and liquid transport through the diaphragms are excluded by appropriate experimental conditions, and impurities are destroyed by prelectrolysis of the system in absence of monomer. It is concluded that in the system studied polymerization exclusively is initiated by the anodic electrode process.
