Summary

  1. 1.

When an equimolecular mixture of 2,4,4-trimethyl-1-pentene and hydrogen containing 5–6% of CO is passed over a Co-clay catalyst at 190° and atmospheric pressure there is 10% of hydrocondensation of the starting olefin with carbon monoxide; in parallel, there is hydrogenation (main reaction), hydrocracking, molecular disproportionation, and isomerization.

  2. 2.

An increase in the CO concentration to 8–9% stops hydrocondensation and reduces hydrogenation, but has little effect on hydrocracking.

  3. 3.

In the absence of CO, hydrogenation of diisobutylene is the main reaction over a wide range of H2/C8H16 ratios, Hydrocracking, molecular disproportionatior, and isomerization occur to a small extent.
